Elevating awareness for the American Safe Climbing Association

The ASCA set out to create a flyer for climbing gyms that would both educate gym climbers about outdoor bolt safety and inspire them to support the ASCA’s mission.

Challenge:

The American Safe Climbing Association (ASCA) set out to create a flyer for climbing gyms that would both educate gym climbers about outdoor bolt safety and inspire them to support the ASCA’s mission. The flyer needed to address two challenges:

  1. Education: Many gym climbers are not aware of outdoor hardware safety or the critical work the ASCA does to replace deteriorating bolts and anchors.
  2. Fundraising: As a small nonprofit, the ASCA relies on donations to fund its efforts, making it crucial to promote donations.

The Process:

I worked closely with the ASCA team to create a flyer that met these goals. The process included:

  1. Focusing the Message: Early drafts included lots of information, but we refined it to highlight key points, like the fact that outdoor hardware isn’t government-regulated and the ASCA’s vital role in keeping climbing safe.
  2. Encouraging Donations: A clear and inviting call to action—“Support your community today!”—was added to motivate climbers to contribute financially. The flyer also includes a QR code and webisite link for quick and easy access to donate.
  3. Visual Design: Bold headers, striking images, and vibrant colors were used to grab attention while maintaining clarity and professionalism.
  4. Iterative Feedback: Multiple rounds of revisions ensured the design effectively communicated the ASCA’s message while remaining visually appealing and action-oriented.

The final design is a vibrant, engaging flyer that educates climbers and encourages them to take action.

Impact:

This flyer not only bridges the knowledge gap for gym climbers but also inspires them to support the ASCA’s mission. By combining education with a clear call to action, this project showcases how thoughtful design can drive awareness and fundraising for a nonprofit.
